Trouble with the BBF97 Firing Pin

Post by mchughcb »

A month ago I was testing 00 3" magnum buckshot out of my BBF97. I couldn't open the action and when I finally did I noticed that the primer was pierced. When I got home and was cleaning the gun I noticed the top firing pin was damaged so that the round edge looked like it had been damaged forming a point. I took it to Mialls 4 weeks ago and I got it back today. They tested the shotgun and the 9.3x74R barrel set. It all worked fine. I pulled out my old 9.3x74R cases I'd used in competition last year and carefully checked the primers and sure enough every second primer had a half moon sharp indent so this problem had been around for a while.

Anyway I have it back, the primers have a nice round dent. I hope to shoot a few fallow and foxes in the next few weeks with it as its been a couple of year since I used it for a full season for everything.

Years ago I had dropped mine off at BlaserUSA, for something I do not recall, and Andrej replaced the firing pins because he noticed some wear to them. Perhaps a firing pin replacement should be done every couple years in high volume round count BBFs.
