Elmers Custom R93 338Rum Barrel, Load development

Post by deerhunter338mag »

Well I thought I might put a post-up of the progress on how Elmers barrel is going.

So, I worked out the COAL to be 3895” using the Berger 250gr EH The bass I’m using is Remington as any brass is like gold to get here. I have them seated 20” off the lands at 3874” or 3022” with the comparator and I just have to push the slid button to eject them fully, if I need to. I have no option really as I want to use the 250gr Projectiles.
I loaded up from 92gr to 95gr of ADI AR2217 powder using Federal gold match magnum primers. Saturday morning up early and off to my Block. There was not a bit of wind the temp was around 14 degrees and the sun was shining, perfect day for it. I check Zero at 100m and it need a quick adjustment as before cerakoting I had put 6 shot’s down it, to make sure it was working and that I got it on paper at 100 meters.
Well I got myself right for 92gr loads. And I was far from impressed with that. 2 touching then ½ inch, then 2 touching again. I then let the barrel cool down to start on 93gr loads. 1st shot was right in the bull. 2nd shot right in the bull. 3rd shot right in the bull. Why I was giving each shot time to cool down before the next, I was thinking this load is really looking great. Do I really want to stuff that group up and let the 4th shot go? Yep, and I did…. 4 shots in the one hole. I thought to myself do I continue on to the next load or just leave it at that as it can only go bad from here on. Well I could tell they really picked up speed as the shots were a good 3” higher on the target and was a bit like I let the cat shoot them. I then let the gun cool for about 20 minutes and moved away from the bench.

So time to try again and it was 95gr loads. 1st two touched and the 3rd shot was just a bit to the left and I feel the last one was me. I’ll re try the 95gr again as it didn’t look to bad.

Day 2 was zeroing the gun in for 93gr loads and running them over the magnetospeed V3 The average speed was 2955fps an SD was saying 10. I was very surprised with the speed as my old 338Rum I had, I was getting 2980fps from 95.5gr of 2217 and that’s a 26” Pac nor barrel with the same 1:9.35 twist. The new Elmer Krieger blaser barrel is 28” with a 1:9.35 twist and I’m using 93gr of 2217. Just shows you size matters.
Anyhow I only had a few crackers left so I had a play on my gong at 760m. 1st shot I could see it was about a foot over the top so using the same hold I shot again with the same result. I just aimed at the bottom of the gong and bingo smack in the middle. Next 2 shot’s the same and I was out of ammo. So this weekend coming if the weather is good to me I play some more with the speeds.

Now ill give the barrel a good clean and load up some more crackers.

Good write up Brenton....just gotta repeat that...nice shooting....
I know when you use a Magnetospeed you can't actually check groups. Need to replicate the group.....

Enough of shooting paper for me, I know it can shoot no need to waste powder as its like gold atm. I'll just try and get the speed down a bit better and it's then time to blood the gun.  Fingers crossed the boss lets you have a play with your new barrel before lock down again or christmas

Well I had a crack why the weather was fantastic today at trying to fine tune the speeds. My starting speed was 2975fps. So I took a couple shots at 760m. Quick drive up and I was about 5” off the bull, 1st 2 shots were about 3” from each other. I was extremely happy with that as I’m still getting connected with this setup.
So I took the speed down 10fps to 2965fps and took a couple more shots. Had a small mirage going right to left but I was more interested in getting the hight right than anything else. Quick check and my hight was spot on. Will do for now when I can, will try at 1000m but it's time to blood the barrel.

Que ???

Does this "taking down the speed 10fps" refer to your software ? It surely can't mean an actual load change :confusion-scratchheadyellow:

It's software....Reducing the fps tells the program to adjust the dial up. So you dial up higher.....

Well true to my word, the 338Rum has now been blooded. 498m shot at a very nice velvet Sambar Stag (just about to start rubbing out). I spotted this gut enjoy the nice sun early this morning. Using the Leica Geovid 10x42HD -B 3000 quickly gave me my dial up. I set the video on record and just let it run. Got behind the The hammer of Thor and set myself up. I then put the crosshairs just under his right front armpit and then nicely touched off the trigger, sending a 250gr EH Berger on its way. The rifle tracked fantastically, I watched the impacted through the scope as he took a spectacular roll off the side of the cliff. As he dropped and rolled I could see the exit wound and that nice pinky blood. Well that was the easy bit. 5hrs later I was Back at the car farkkked. Extremely hard carry out across cliff face, rocks, fallen trees, at one point a tree pushed me back and I guess it wasn't my time, I just manage to grab a small tree that saved me from fall about 10 meters of a cliff face. I just un clipped my pack and rolled out of it and stood up. I then pulled the pack up as it was on the edge and put it in front of the small tree that saved me. Was then I realised I would of been in a bit of trouble. But I just pushed on, and on and on till I seen the walking track and then it was straight back to the family truckster and off to Adam in Mansfield to see if he could fix the busted tip, which he said no issues at all. Well I seen 7 deer today all stags but 6 young ones and the one I shot. watched 2 stags have a bit of a dust up as well.
So now it's time to clean all my gear that got blood over it and have it ready for the next trip.

Watched that again on slow motion on the big screen. That went straight through him and geezus the blood was pouring out the exit wound. I thought my 416 Rem is bad on Sambar but that must be just as bad. Nice size too and he was just kaput.
