Woodleigh 30 Cal 220gr RN SN

Post by mchughcb »

Rifle K95 stutzen
Calibre 30-06
Projectile Woodleigh 65C
Powder: 52gr of Thales 2209
Primer: CCI
Case: Geco
Grouping: MOA average at 100m.

At the end of last year I was unhappy with the performance of my load of 180gr sierra gamekings, 180gr nosler accubond and factory 170gr H-Mantel Gecos on sambar from my K95. They are a big deer (can be over 650lb) and I hunt in extremely thick country. A deer can literally be 2m away and you won't see it. While the projectiles obviously kill the emphasis is to drop them exactly where they were hit. I have avoided the woodleighs even though they are Australian made because I could never get the 165gr to shoot accurately at the range.

After watching a sambar hind shot last year at 8m in the chest take off for 200m I dumped the accubonds. I watched a friend use my rifle and shoot a hind at 40m through the neck and exit out the spine and it still ran 40m uphill before his dog found it. And a few lost with the Gecos had me scratching my head.

Blaserbud LOW has been using the 240 Woodleigh in his 300WBM barrel and said they were shooting nice and accurate so I thought I'd try the 65c projectile which is a 220gr RN SN SD of 0.331 and BC of 0.367. Well the performance of the woodleigh has been outstanding. On Sunday I shot my 6th sambar with this load and I'll make some observations.

1. All chest shot with one close to the neck.
2. All bang flop or two steps and dead.
3. Ranges from 30m to 120m
4. All pass through except for 120m shot which the bullet ended up on skin on the opposite shoulder
5. No blood trail because they just drop, only get blood when I roll them over for butchering.
6. The one fallow I shot front on walking to me turned and ran 10m before dropping dead.

This the performance I need when hunting sambar. Obviously the velocity for this load is working. My mate recovered the one bullet from the 120m shot so when he finds it I'll post a picture up here.

I have no experience with deer, but 225gn Woodleigh PP's out of my 338WM are devastating on feral donkeys and large boars. For a relatively cheap, normal bonded bullet (i.e. Not a fancy $2+ mono) I was very impressed.

High SD - soft - blunt - low to moderate velocity - short range.

Not surprised that it works for you :) . That simple equation has been very effective in various calibres for a very long time, plus now we have a little more bullet integrity courtesy of bonding.

However, I have seen low speed 220s (NOT woodies) come apart in a hind and only just get the job done, so good construction is still vital.

I use 130grs Woodleighs PP out of my .270 Win - with perfecr results: pigs and Fox just rolled over and died - the bullet is just a bit too tough for roe deer: the mainly walk 10m before they drop, but all Exit wounds, and NO meat damage other then a hole... Perfect for me... Trying to get my .30-06 and .375H&H to fly with them... :-)

Today was a good test. A massive stag at 50m. Complete pass through chest shot. Deer ran 20m and collapsed. My mates dog tracked in thick scrub almost no blood trail but dead. This deer is well over 600lb. Easily the biggest deer I have seen.
My mate was extremely impressed with the performance.

Also a kilometer away as we were walking back to the car a hind popped out. The shot was about 100m and it dropped dead with the chest shot. Complete pass through almost no blood but front legs destroyed son dog food only. Now my mate was really convinced and we didn't need the dog to find it.

And from earlier in the week this took one to the chest and rolled over dead at 50m.
