Rotary Case Tumblers

Post by 9.3x64 »

Hi,
Has anyone got any expirience or opinions on the below tumbler?

It seems like a very good deal to me for $200.

Tumbler with 1kg Pin Media
Make: Straight Shooter
Model: KT 2000 5kg Rotary
Condition: New
Price: $200
Comment: *Free Postage Australia Wide* 5kg Rotary Tumbler with 1Kg stainless pin media. Absolutely the best and fastest way to clean your brass cases for reloading, inside and out. Gives better results in 1 hour than what walnut/corn media can provide in 8 hours. Large capacity that will clean Approx 200 cases to a brightest finish on all surfaces that can not be achieved with corn or walnut media. The 1mmx10mm pin media is fine enough to clean tight corners without leaving residue and will not work harden or damage your brass in any way. Can be used with all commercial tumbling solutions. But for simple and cost effective cleaning use 4 cups water, 1 cup white vinegar, 1 teaspoon of citric acid and 1 teaspoon dishwashing detergent. Comes with spare drive belt and water seal gasket. KT2000-180 barrel polishing machine Voltage: 220V Power: 60W Bidirectional rotation can be timed, optional five-speed! Machine size (CM): 27 * 22 * 11; Barrel Size: Length (CM): 19 Diameter (CM): 18; Hole diameter: 9CM. Price includes postage Australia wide.

I have been watching that on Used Guns. They are incredibly cheap for what you get which would be my concern.
Check out this page and have a look at US made tumblers all supported by a local distributor with parts guaranteed. I bought a Lortone tumbler a few years ago and it has been excellent (they also have Thumbler).
Frankford Arsenal and Lyman rotary tumblers are also available in Oz.

My thinking is that if you are going to spend $200 it is worth looking at a unit designed for long use and with parts availability. Have a look around the Aussie Sapphire site and you will find a package put together for shooters as well as a tutorial on tumbling rifle brass.
They were terrific people to deal with.

The Frankford has a lined drum which will help stop abrasive scratching on plastic. Doesn't look like this one has it. This one has variable speed control though.

The drum lining is a good point and one of the reasons I went with a lapidarists kit - designed for gemstones and jewellery and has to be a non-scratch unit. Mine has a rubber drum which makes it somewhat quieter as well.

Being single side access may make it difficult to get the pins out. Two sided allows you to drop in bucket and they all fall out.

Mmm thanks guys.
I had not thought of any of the above points.
You get what you pay for I guess.
It will be interesting if someone on here owns one and can share their expirience.

I can't comment on that one but I've had the Frankford version for a while and wish I'd been able to buy it 10 years ago. I set that one tumbling on the concrete floor of the boiler room. Even with the rubber lining it's makes a fair old racket. I'd run it in the barn except I do my reloading during the winter and it is usually well below zero.

Thankyou Vaughan, I am starting to lean towards the Frankford Arsenal tumbler.
I like the idea of having no belts to replace.

Too right Vaughn I shut the door to the back room, although the volume of water and charge makes a difference too. And the frankford has the rubber lining too.

So what your guys are saying is the Frankford Arsenal unit is very noisey?

Yes compared to the old kernel media vibratory but first the time, quality and volume of cleaning there is no comparison. Also what I have noticed is you put in a few good squirts of detergent the inside of the neck is so clean I don't need to put graphite dry lube on the inside of the necks before fls. That saves time and stops the carbon staining everything it touches.

I guess I could always put a cardboard box over it. That would also reduce the noise.
