.45 Blaser range testing - riveting stuff!

Post by Gun Barrel Ecologist »

Finally got the chance to test the .45 Blaser at Belmont yesterday :D

After considerable examination of data posted here http://www.blaserbuds.com/forum/viewtop ... 9&start=60 and here http://www.blaserbuds.com/forum/viewtop ... 42&t=12963 I decided to run 55, 56, 57 & 57.5g of 2207 under the 350g Woodleigh RN and 52, 53, 54 & 54.5g under the 400g Woodleigh PP in Bertram brass lit by 210 primers.

Results were interesting

400.jpg
The 55, 56, 52, 53, & 54g loads exhibited backed out primers. The upper loads 54.5, 57 & 57.5 had some primers sitting flush and looking "normal" with others backing out then noticeably riveting into a pancake.

The amount of soot around the casenecks didnt vary with loads but starting loads dont appear to have gripped the chamber wall at all.

The backed out primers to my eye indicate an excess of headspace - with virgin Bertram brass, anything is possible  - and whilst the flattened primers look worrisome spent primers can be put into virgin brass indicating the pockets didnt stretch in firing

If a headspace issue I was hoping any difference in shoulder position would stick out like the proverbial between fired and virgin brass but my eyes cant see it :confusion-shrug: Time to get out the micrometer

I am thinking it is a shoulder too far back on your new brass. I would take a light load, with the bullet lightly touching the lands, fire them single shot, and fire form them. Then try to just bump the shoulder back about .004 when you size them.
There are no fleas on the 9.3s

Very interesting. What distance, what scope, what velocity?

Looks good then. I'd be happy with that accuracy.

Looking at the brass I'm not sure if its a shoulder too far back on the virgins or too narrow a shoulder that is not engaging with anything until firing

Its interesting to plug a few figures into Pointblank and have a play. There is a lot of energy at the muzzle but .458" bullets don't hold on to it long, with the bullets dropping below the quoted effective velocity ranges at all of 100 to 150m
An Aimpoint is probably the best optic for this barrel.

Factory loads with the 350g Woodleigh RN at all of 2035fps have to be a breeze on your shoulder compared to my handloads but wouldn't go far before the speed drops below the recommended impact velocity of 1800.

I'm keen to try the 325g Flex tip and perhaps AR2219 under it to stretch the effective range and maybe BM2 under the 400g

Not a big fan of the Bertram brass you might find it a bit out with specs. Its been known to happen at times with he's brass. Mate had to take he's up to Bertram's place to get them all re milled a touch.
Measure it, when it’s on the deck

Virgin Brass has a shoulder width of 12.66, fired is 12.98, once fired resized is 12.88mm :?
