K95 questions

Post by Tehama »

Hello
I am new here and at this time Blaser-less. I do have an interest in the K95 model in the Euro-calibers such as the 6.5X55, 7X57R, 7X65R and 9.3X74R. I am a reloader.
First up I would like to know if the Blaser barrels have the typical long throats found in these chamberings as I am interested in shooting the following weight bullets:
6X55--100grs.120grs,130grs &140gr
7X57 & 7X65R's--120grs through 160grs.
I usually find that I get better accuracy with the bullets fairly close (.025" or less) to the lands and and from what I understand the above calibers typically have long throats there by requiring that you use heavy for caliber bullets.
Also would like to know if any of you using these calibers have had good accuracy (MOA or better) with the lighter bullets.
The other question I have is about the twist rate in the 9.3X74R Blaser barrel as I can't seem to find that info on Blasers website. The twist rate is important to me because I shoot a lot of cast bullets and a rate of 1:13/14 like in my CZ550 or slower would be great. The only reason I didn't buy a Ruger #1 in 9.3X74R was that they used a 1:10 twist rate which makes it harder to get accuracy with cast at high velocity (generally) than with a slower rate.
Thanks for any replies and insight that you may have, :)
Mike

Yes, they are fairly long throated. In the 6.5X55 the 120s through 160s work great. Not tried the 100s but suspect they will give a guy problems. I also shoot a 7X64 and run into problems with bullets lighter than 154 grains. They prefer flat bases in the lighter bullets. This is not a problem for me, as I like to shoot heavy bullets. Am working on your twist rate question.

Hello Corjack
Thanks for your reply. Regarding your 7X64 is it chambered in a bolt rifle? I just recently bought a Brno chambered in that caliber but have not had time to reload and shoot it yet. Any data that you may have would be appreciated.
I got to thinking about light bullets and remembered that the 87gr. Sierra shot very well out of an old 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser I once had. That rifle with it's long throat seemed to shoot all bullet weights well when I worked with it.
Any word on the twist in a Blaser 9.3X74R yet?

Best I can tell it is a 1 in 14.5 twist on the 9.3X74.

The 7X64 is in an R93 Blaser. Use H4831sc it is the most consistant powder I have found in the 7X64.

Why the 6,5x55 in a kiplauf? I would rather use the 6,5x57r with is mouch easyer to use in that kind of weapon.

I know I am well pleased with my K 95 Stutzen in 308 WCF.

It is one of the most accurate hunting rifles I have ever fired.

Corjack The 1:14 twist would be perfect for what I want in a 9.3X74R. You removed the last argument I was having with my internal dialog as to why I shouldn't be spending the $ these rifle cost.
As it turns out I was looking at a used K95 with two barrels,9.3X74R and 6.5X55, plus two sets of mounts and scopes. I ordered it and it was shipped yesterday.
Excitement abounds! :D
H4831sc sounds good for the 7X64 as I have several lbs.
What is your favorite powder and bullet weight for the 9.3X74R?

Sweden I have no experience with these kiplaufs and if I had my choice and I was buying new I would have bought a 7X65R as an accessory barrel.

NE450No2 I have seen on other forums that you are pleased with your little Stutzen. Knowing that you have been around a "few" accurate rifles speaks well for these K95's.

I thank you all for your replies and wish you a most successful hunting season.
Mike

It would be hard to beat those 2 calibres for a 2 barrel K95 set.

The 6.5x55 is a great cartridge, low recoil, flat shooting for deer and antelope sized game, with the heavier 160gr bullets you could do black bear over baits, wild pigs even elk.

But for those last three the 9,3x74R is perfect. It will be a little "thumpy" in the K 95.

For deer and pigs the Seer 270gr bullet at @2200 to 2300 fps wprks great, like wise does Normas factory 232 gr Vulcan, but it is hard to beat 286gr bullets ion the 9,3.

I load my 286 gr Woodleighs and Noslet artitions around 2225fps and they kill everything from coyotes and deer, to cape buff, giraffe and elephant.

The last 9.3X74R I had was such a POS (It was not a Blaser) I was not able to determine what was the best powder. My studies indicate that with bullets from 250 grains through 286s, IMR 4064 was reported to give very good accuracy.

I use IMR 4831 in my double for 286gr bullets.
RL 15 gave great accuracy with the 270 Speers.
I think IMR 4064 would be a great powder as well.

You are right about these two cal. making a good 2 barrel set. I live in the B.C. interior and there is crown land just 2 miles from were I live. The Doc sez that I should get out and walk more and I think this K95 less the scope would be prefect for that. Will probably load the 9.3X74R to a comfortable recoil level and use it the most in the fall hunting season and the 6.5X55 in the late fall after hunting season and in the spring during the early snow melt when there is a chance to see or call wolves. There are plenty of tracks then in the mud on the plowed out logging roads and I have called in several in the past.

I have just a bit of 4064 left and I see that the Nosler manual shows data for it so I have a starting point there. The 9.3X74R being a low pressure round really lends itself to cast bullets so next summer I will work up loads for it. Can't wait as I really enjoy load development.
