How's this for BS, my little rant

Post by SPEEDY »

I just got pulled aside this afternoon with about 10 other blokes from work, as we are all licensed firearms owners. We were told that we have till Friday to provide work with the details of what firearms we own, where we store them and there serial numbers, and there not sure at this point about our license details.

Now I'm pretty pissed off about this, it's bad enough that we have to register them and then have our storage checked by police. but that's the law so all I can do is grin and bear it, but there is no legal reason why work needs to know those details, it's a breach of privacy and just plain heavy handed. I don't know about the other blokes yet but I'm not telling them manure, if they have a right/need to know then they can fill out the paperwork and request the details from the registry, if they do need to know then they can tell them and if they don't then they just bugger off :snooty:

Dont know specifically about Australia, but it looks like a highly illegal act being asked this information at your work place and one that could lead your employer to a lot of serious trouble.

Hang in there Speedy, be polite but firm in your refusal.

Unless you are using private firearms for work purposes (I've been down that track myself) they can get stuffed, hell if you are in the govt dept I think you're in they'd have the firearms details on your file from ASIO anyhow ;)

Officious OH&S / HR officers in govt depts like to keep such info on file as it gives them another database to "manage" however you'd be within your right to tell them to go plait their poop IMHO

If they genuinely need to know, then they can find out through the proper channels. But my concern is "who will have access to those details, and who will be able to find out" only 3 people know what address my firearms are stored at, the registry being one, me the other and the owner of the property the 3rd, but what happens if the wrong people get that list and decide to pay those homes a visit?

Though I have absolutely no idea about Australian law, I would not comply :snooty: , and if they try to threaten your job, I would contact an attorney ASAP.

It is probably advisable to contact an attorney NOW before this situation progresses.

I know from various soldiers here that they have had to fill out paperwork with their military bases as to what guns they own and where they're stored, etc. They didn't like it but the military deemed it necessary to KNOW those things about the soldiers. It's all about CONTROL and the ever increasing iron hand of the governments as they try to intimidate, regulate and forbid people to own weapons. I would think that if you're working for somebody other than the government you wouldn't have to tell the employer anything but I'm definitely not a lawyer and not familiar with ya'll's laws. Only thing I know is it sounds like it sucks big time.

Good luck with it!

I would ask them to show me in writing, what gives them the right to no such personel information. If they can not furnish that info, disregard them. If they fire you, sue them for wrongfull termination, loss of wages, etc etc.

Now that's a task and a half, it would take hours to delete it all properly from my computer, I cut down to 200 or so gig recently but bugger me formatting that would take forever, at least they can't regulate that yet, what happens between consenting adults, various toys, a toilet, a basket of vegetables, 50lt or paint on latex and some masterfully controlled gag reflexes is still legal here

Although if the "Greens" get enough votes on Saturday then that might just become legal within your own family
