I don't wear camo anymore, I used to but I was shooting good game long before and I'm doing it now, scent, noise and movement the big things IMO

Always nice to have a beer with mates as that's what it's all about. The best thing about hunting is you get to pick who you go with,if you don't like them then you go. I never get issues with mates getting drunk and firearms coming out as for the smoking I don't smoke and it want help to much if your trying to fine a deer. If their his rule's Then that's it. If your not happy try someone different. As for Camo it's for people not to much for animals how every you do need to blend in a bit and to cover you white Complexion as the animals well see that.

I actually stirred up some of the more "well known" deer hunters down here when I stated that most of the more successful Deer hunters are so because they were full camo, but not to hide from the Deer

well...one thing are outfitters rules as a philosophical issue...he can demand everybody hunting with him wear fancy shirts, or a feather in the ass...as long as you know before, you accept or not. in portugal that guy wouldn't sell one hunt. I'm not a smoker, nor a great drinker, but what's wrong with a couple of beers after a hunting? and if you want to go outside and smoke ?(as long as you don't smoke inside, cause I hate smoke smell ).
another thing is the practical issue: drink before hunting could be a problem (in portugal the alcohol limit to hunt is the same as to drive) as everybody knows and smoke decreases your possibilities when you are in big game hunting (anda could be dangerous at summer).
notwithstanding this, I have friends who use to smoke at moonlight hog hunting and kill animals too. The explanation is simple: if the wind comes from the animal to you, the hog walks at 10 m and do not smell nothing, even if you are smoking, have parfum, etc. if the wind is from you to the animal...the hog will smell you everytime. the diference is if you are smoking it smells you at 500 m if you don't have strange smells it smells you at 100 m or even 50 m. this could have very diferent results at the very end.
about camouflage and scent covers:
if you are hunting doves, pigeons or ducks, camouflage is vital. in big game is not. as long as you don't move and don't wear white clothes pigs dont see you. even deer, if you dont move and have no sillouette agains the sky, I think they don't see you. I've been often in montarias with orange vest and cap, and does came and pass 20 m from me walking and they seems to dont look at me.
I had a scentlock complete vest (biboverall , gloves, hat with mask to cut breath) and it seems to work well when new, but with the time it becomes less efficient. but as it was very tedious to keep vest in bag till hunting, remove vest before enter in car, put the vest in the dryer, whash with special soap, use the mask with heat, so on, so on, I have it on my closet since long time. now I prefer to use the good old fashioned choose the right spot to stand according the wind and natural scent covers as eucalipthus leaves,and other bush veggies i dont know the english names. I dont really knows if it works with hogs, but my wife likes the smell

Camo clothing is a fashion statement here in the US, and the idea is that if you wear it you must be a hunter. In my younger days, I thought I needed camo clothing and every gear and gadget that came out for deer hunting, but as I have gotten older, I have realized that the deer and hogs just don't care. In Oklahoma, I have to wear at least 400 square inches of blaze orange by law. What my son and I have found funny is that many of the OK hunters wear blaze orange as a fashion statement like Texans do camo.

Where I hunt, both in Texas and Oklahoma, the deer are much more concerned with movement that anything else. Scent can be an issue, but my place here in Texas is surrounded on three sides by rural subdivisions. Many of the deer can be found eating under the eaves of someone's house in their flower beds during the night, and they move back into the woods during the day. They know what humans smell like and, for the most part, don't really see it as a threat. In OK, it is more of an issue, but still, there are farmers and oil field employees in and out of our places year around.

Generally, when I am "hog hunting", I don't worry about what I wear or smell like, but for "deer" hunting, I do try to use cover scent and wear clothing that aren't "flashy". Here are my deer photos from 2009 which are great examples of my hunting attire in both Texas and Oklahoma.

On the second picture a camo clothes that been washed in color enhancing detergent.

This is a fancy-shmancy camo under a "black light". That is what a deer actually sees, but not that photo-realistic hardwood leaves pattern. I think that any clothes made with less reflective fabric will work. Just IMHO

Many of us with some military training know the basic tenets of CAMOUFLAGE.

I was taught about the 5 Sisters and their Mother.

the 5 Sisters being : SHAPE, SILHOUETTE, SHINE, SHADOW, SOUND

and the Mother being, of course MOVEMENT, the greatest give away.

Shape, Shine and to some extent Sound can be taken care by the type of clothes we wear. The rest is common sense and some practice.

It also helps if your on the firing line or are seeing the biggest buck of your life to ensure that one remembers these basic tenents.

Most equipment is of matte finish these days, but at one time we'd pride ourselves in the quality of polish on our rifles and other equipments.

Clothing has come a long way in getting better and better with the trend shifting more to Khakis and other natural browns from leafy greens.

And for hunters, SMELL remains a major factor, so we often hunt into the wind, sometimes without even realizing it. Of course for big cats smell doesnt really matter except I believe for the Siberian Tiger who I have never hunted, and many of us will never hunt, but has I understand an excellent sense of smell.

Cannot say much about the effect of perfume on game, but can state that rolling in buffalo dung is not as effective as one may think. The old lady would not even let me in the house, leave alone the bedroom

I do have a small drink now and then;but can take it or leave it. And it doesn't in any way diminish the experience. Put it this way; can't even remember the last time? 6? 8? months ago?

Be honest don't care for smoking and the habit. I should stop at that.


The camo deal,I think can help in certain circumstances, but the offerings on the market are often poor. Or the work only some of the time.

I do feel, depending on set up, I like them for turkey hunting. Mainly when I don't want to take a blind and move a few times during the morning to set up under a tree with minimal brush if need be.
