US Customs export issues

Post by thechamp »

I saw this thread while ago on accuratereloading and thought it was appropriate to bring it to this forum's attention. This should especially be of interest here since our board encompasses the world and deals are likely between board members. I do not know the gentleman that brought it up and have no way to verify if his information is accurate. However if our Customs are going to get this chicken manure to confiscate a wooden rifle stock, where does that leave us with shipping a high end rifle scope from one party to the other? From what he describes it's pretty much the government TELLING you that you're screwed and if you want to argue it they'll really screw you and still take your property. Some other members chimed in and appear to believe this to be the law and that they can seize anything that could be conscrewed a 'defense item'.

I've shipped a few items to various places in the world and never encountered a problem. But if they're going to start nitpicking and enforcing these cockamamie laws it could certainly make things much more difficult to contend with.

Here is the thread, see what ya'll think:

Something that we might consider would be locating someone here with an import export license and striking up a deal with them to handle shipping of any items for blaserbuds members at a set fee. It probably wouldn't amount to much business for a while but in the event they're also a dealer of sporting goods items they could do some advertising here and possibly sell some of their wares to our members.

I did sell a Sauer 202 bolt several months back to a guy in Australia and he had me ship it to a place in Michigan that handled all of his export issues. Pretty sure I still have his email addy and may have the name of the shop in my email files.

I'm sure we can come up with a safe and legal alternative to getting items confiscated by the government and later sold at auction...

I have such an agent in California, and will post the address when I am back in office in the week.

The United States, being the biggest market in the world also has some tremendous bargains, especially for gun related stuff.

This way, I am able to buy what I need and have it shipped to my "local address" in California. I then fill out my Customs Declaration form, and I am liable for any issues with the US Customs, thereby taking this burden off the seller.

But it is not allowed to ship complete ammo or a complete gun. Components are ok. :)

GREAT! From talking to the Australian who bought the bolt he said that was an easy deal. However he did mention that buying a complete rifle now was a pain to have it shipped to them. I'm assuming in your case - barrels, bolts, clips, stocks, mounts, scopes, etc wouldn't be a problem....

Thanks for the info and assistance! I'm sure it'll come in handy. We might ask Ron to make this a sticky once the info is here so members can find it easily down the line when they might need it.

Update on the Custom's issue. The guy posted today that he'd talked to Customs and they were very easy to get along with. Seems that this law has been on the books for a while but 'recently' (hmmm Obama?) they'd been instructed to enforce it. They told him he could come to Seattle and pick it up which obviously wouldn't work. They could release it to someone there who could ship it back. Several options for him to get it back of which the last one was trying to get the post office to return it to the sender. So be aware that OUR KOMMIE KING is doing what he can behind the scenes to make life more difficult. Dam I hope we can kick his ass out in 2012!

You can read his comments at the end of the original link to get the whole story...

sounds like your going down the road we are on. Regarding all this type of manure. That's why the prices over here are so high as you can't get any thing yourself.

With regards to rifle scopes there are export restrictions in the USA. Most sellers on Ebay can't be bother getting off their arse to do the paper work. Euro optics do. I had bought some gear of a seller who then decided he wouldn't ship because filling out two sheets of paper work was too hard. I had him send to an Australian mate of mine, living in the same US state. He had the paperwork done and exported in 2 hours.

Haven't tried a rifle yet and I've been looking at some of the blasers on gunbroker because our import dealers over here charge like a wounded bull and then we are slugged with another 10% tax. With the drop in the US dollar it starts to become attractive again, I just need to convince the wife why I need another blaser preferably a D99
